How to Set Up Netflix for Seniors: Simple Step-by-Step Guide

I get this call a lot: “I signed up for Netflix but I can’t figure out how to get it on my TV.” It sounds simple, but the first time is always a little confusing. This guide walks through every step so you can get it working on your own — or I can come help if you get stuck.

If you are wondering about cost before getting started, I answered that in my guide on whether Netflix has a senior discount and what your real options are.

What You Need Before You Start

You will need three things: a Netflix account, your email address and password, and a device to watch on. That is it. If you do not have an account yet, I will cover that below.

Signing Into Netflix on Your Smart TV or Streaming Device

  • Open the Netflix app on your TV or streaming device.
  • Select Sign In. If it asks whether you have a membership, choose Yes.
  • Enter your email address and password.
  • If you cannot find the Netflix app, I can help you install it during a visit. See my streaming device setup page for Lakewood Ranch seniors.

Creating a Netflix Account for the First Time

If you do not have an account yet, here is how to set one up.

  1. Go to Netflix.com on your computer, tablet, or phone.
  2. Choose a plan. There are ad-supported and ad-free options. You can change or cancel anytime.
  3. Enter your email address and create a password. Write both down somewhere safe.
  4. Add a payment method and follow the on-screen steps to finish.

Once your account is ready, take a look at my guide on how to find movies and shows you will actually like on Netflix — it makes browsing a lot easier.

A Few Helpful Tips

  • Set up a profile for yourself so Netflix learns what you like.
  • Turn on subtitles in the playback settings if you want captions while you watch.
  • Use Continue Watching to pick up right where you left off.
  • Lower the video quality in app settings if your internet connection is slow.

Common Problems and Quick Fixes

  • Cannot sign in: Use “Forgot password” on Netflix.com to reset it. If you need help with your email first, I have an email guide for seniors.
  • Netflix app is missing on your TV: Update your TV software, then search the app store to install it.
  • Internet keeps dropping: Restart your modem and router by unplugging them for 30 seconds.

Watch Out for Netflix Scams

If you get an email or a call saying your Netflix account has a problem, do not click any links. Always go directly to Netflix.com and sign in from there. I covered this kind of thing in my scam awareness guide for seniors in Lakewood Ranch.
