Apple's Legacy Contact feature can help someone you trust get into parts of your iCloud account after you pass away. I think it is worth setting up, but I do not tell clients it solves the whole problem, because it does not.
The bigger thing I recommend to every client is simpler and more reliable: make sure the person you trust actually has your device PIN, your Apple ID email, and your Apple ID password written down somewhere they can find. Apple will not hand that information over to your family if something happens to you. Legacy Contact or not, without those details, your family can be locked out.

Why Apple Digital Legacy Matters for Seniors
Apple Legacy Contact lets you name someone who can request access to parts of your iCloud data after you pass away. It is a real safety net, and I think it is worth setting up. But it is not a substitute for your family actually having your login information.
Many seniors assume Apple will unlock a device for the family if needed. Apple does not do this without the correct Apple ID, password, and device passcode, even with Legacy Contact in place. That is the part most people miss.

Apple created Digital Legacy tools to help people pass down important digital information. Seniors can choose a Legacy Contact who will receive access to their iCloud data after Apple verifies the request.
This access includes photos, messages, notes, and files stored in iCloud. It does not include passwords, payment details, or items tied to outside accounts.
Legacy Contact Limits Seniors Should Know
- No passwords: Passwords and Keychain items stay locked.
- No payment details: Apple does not share credit cards or banking info.
- No purchased media: Movies, apps, and books cannot be transferred.
- No third-party logins: App accounts remain locked unless credentials are known.

The One Step That Matters More Than Legacy Contact
The Access Key alone does not unlock your iPhone or iPad. Your trusted person must also know your device PIN, your Apple ID email, and your Apple ID password. Without these, the device stays locked, and Apple will not step in to help your family get past it.

Families often contact Apple after a loved one passes away because they cannot unlock the phone. Apple only grants access when passwords, the Access Key, and legal documents match. What does a Legacy Contact get access to?
They can access photos, messages, notes, and iCloud files. They cannot access passwords or payment details.
Can a Legacy Contact unlock an iPhone?
The Access Key is not enough. They must also know the device passcode.
Does Apple delete the account after death?
Apple grants access for about three years before removing the account unless it is backed up.
Can caregivers help with Apple Legacy setup?
Yes. Caregivers can check backups, password storage, and Access Key details so everything is prepared correctly.
Does power of attorney give access to an Apple account?
No, not by itself. Power of attorney does not automatically unlock an iPhone, iPad, or iCloud account. Legacy Contact only works after a death, using a death certificate. If a parent or loved one becomes unable to manage their accounts while still living, the only reliable way in is having their actual Apple ID email, Apple ID password, and device PIN.
