I hear this one from clients all the time: “I turn on Netflix and I have no idea what to watch.” With thousands of options on the screen, it is easy to feel stuck. This guide shows you the simplest ways to find something you will actually enjoy — without endless scrolling.
If you have not set up Netflix yet, start with my simple step-by-step Netflix setup guide for seniors first, then come back here. If you are wondering about cost, I covered that in my guide on whether Netflix has a senior discount.
How Netflix Learns What You Like
You do not need to search for something new every time you sit down. Netflix watches what you play and gradually fills your home screen with shows and movies that match your taste. The more you watch, the better the suggestions get.
This means the first week or two may feel a little random. Give it some time and it improves on its own.
Simple Ways to Find Something to Watch
If you do not want to wait for Netflix to figure out your taste, here are three easy approaches.
First, browse by category. Look for rows labeled Comedies, Classics, Documentaries, or True Stories. These change over time and are a good way to explore without feeling overwhelmed.
Second, use the search bar. Type a word you enjoy — history, nature, cooking, music, westerns — and Netflix will show everything that matches. You do not need to know a specific title.
Third, check the Popular or Trending rows. These show what a lot of other people are watching right now, which is a decent starting point if nothing else catches your eye.
Use My List to Save Shows for Later
When something looks interesting but you are not ready to watch it yet, select Add to My List. This saves it to a personal row on your home screen so you can find it easily later.
A lot of my clients in Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton find that building up a short list makes Netflix feel much less overwhelming. Instead of searching every time, you just go to your list.
Accessibility Features Worth Knowing About
Netflix has several settings that make watching easier for seniors with hearing or vision challenges.
- Subtitles and captions — turn these on to see dialogue on screen while you watch.
- Adjustable subtitle size — increase the text size and contrast so captions are easier to read.
- Audio descriptions — a narrator describes what is happening on screen, helpful if you have trouble seeing details.
Tips to Keep Netflix Simple Day to Day
- Create your own profile so Netflix builds recommendations around what you watch, not what someone else in the house watches.
- Use voice search if your remote has a microphone button — speak the title or topic instead of typing.
- Use pause and rewind freely — there is no penalty for stopping and starting as many times as you like.
Watch Out for Netflix Scams
Netflix will never send you an email or pop-up asking you to click a link to keep your account active or claim a free offer. If you see something like that, do not click it. Go directly to Netflix.com and sign in from there. I covered this kind of trick in my scam awareness guide for seniors in Lakewood Ranch.
