TiVo Roamio Not Working? Common Issues and How to Fix Them

The TiVo Roamio TCD846000 is a reliable DVR but like anything connected to a home network, it can run into problems. Most of the issues people call about come down to a handful of things.

Here’s what to check before assuming something is broken.

The Guide Shows Channels but No Titles

This usually means the TiVo hasn’t finished downloading guide data from its servers, or it lost its connection at some point.

  • Check your internet connection first — if your router is offline the TiVo can’t reach its servers
  • Restart the TiVo — unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in
  • Give it time — after reconnecting, guide data can take 10 to 20 minutes to fully load

No Picture or Channels Coming Through

If you’re getting a blank screen or no channels at all, the issue is usually the coax connection or the channel scan.

  • Check the coax cable — make sure it’s snug at both ends, at the wall and at the back of the TiVo
  • Run a new channel scan — go to Settings, then Channels, and run a new scan. This resets what the TiVo knows about your cable lineup
  • Check your TV input — make sure the TV is set to the right HDMI port

TiVo Won’t Connect to the Network

This is the most common issue, especially after a router change or a move.

  • Restart your router — unplug it for 30 seconds and plug it back in before trying to reconnect the TiVo
  • Re-enter your wifi password — if you recently changed your wifi password the TiVo still has the old one
  • Try a wired connection — if wifi keeps failing, plugging a network cable directly from the TiVo into the router is more reliable
  • Check for network compatibility — if you live in an apartment building with shared managed wifi, the building network may not work directly with the TiVo. In that case a separate router in the apartment creates its own network the TiVo can connect to. This came up on a recent job — you can read more about how that played out on my portfolio site.

Recordings Are Missing or Not Saving

  • Check your storage — the TiVo Roamio has a 1TB drive which holds around 150 hours of HD content. If it’s full, older recordings get deleted automatically to make room
  • Check your recording settings — go into the recording and confirm it’s set to record new episodes, not just one specific airing
  • Check for conflicts — the Roamio has 4 to 6 tuners but if too many shows overlap it may skip one

Remote Not Responding

  • Replace the batteries — simple but easy to overlook
  • Re-pair the remote — hold down the TiVo button and the TV power button together for about 5 seconds to reset the pairing

When to Call for Help

If you’ve worked through the steps above and something still isn’t right, it may be worth having someone take a look in person. Sometimes the issue is the equipment and sometimes it’s how everything is connected together — and that’s harder to sort out over the phone.

If you’re in the Manatee County area and need a hand, I provide in-home streaming and device setup help for seniors in Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, Parrish, and nearby communities. Feel free to get in touch and we can talk through what’s going on.
